"In my art I show a moment in time that has evoked in me a refreshing experience of visual pleasure. It is this experience that I would like to pass on to the viewer."
ARTIST STATEMENT:
While growing up in northern Manitoba, I spent my summers at the lake, often times hanging over the edge of a boat watching the surface patterns of waves, observing the reflections of the shore on the water and peering into the depths to see what was floating and on the bottom of the lake. An interest in landscape, and water in particular, informs my art today. Summers are now spent camping and hiking in the foothills and mountains, and canoeing the lakes of western and northern Canada. Gathering information with small watercolour plein air sketches and with a camera, I return to the studio to paint those moments of observation that I have enjoyed.
In the landscape I am attracted to shorelines, to close focus views of the surface and depths of water, to the patterns that reflections form, and to the interplay of transparency and solid object. Similar interests are evident in still life works. In both, colour is enhanced and occasionally arbitrary and value contrasts are accentuated. I do this to orchestrate attention to what I have found visually enjoyable.
