NorVA 2016 Retreat Info

4/21/2016

NorVA Artist Retreat!  Yipee yipee yipee!

Enjoy the company of fellow artists in a week long non-instructional retreat, July 17th to the 24th, 2016 at the Denareplex in the village of Denare Beach!

The village is lakeside, with clear cool sand beaches and gorgeous Amisk lake for your canoe or kayak. The village of Denare Beach has a small general store, a pub, a wonderful Northern Gateway Museum and gorgeous  paths and trails for bikes and hikes.
The Fabulous NorVA Artist Retreat
This is a week long non-instructional retreat, although there are three mini workshops scheduled so far from Jan Layh- Palette Knife afternoon and Colour Theory morning  and Karen Clark with a Batik Morning. These are offered by retreat artists for retreat participants. If you are interested in offering a mini workshop just let Karen know.

The relaxed, generous, sharing atmosphere will light the creative fire within.

From July 17th to 24th, the Denareplex will be transformed into artist studio space. photographers, writers, filmographers, poets, sculptors, batik artists, musicians, composers, painters are all welcome to attend this retreat. The intent is to create a tranquil setting far from the whirl of everyday responsibilities. Artists can indulge themselves in new and wildly bizarre art projects in the supportive company of like minded individuals. Collaborative projects spring up between two, three and even four artists. It is fascinating and exciting to watch the group come together as they share meals, ideas and knowledge with one another.

Cost: $160.00 checques payable to  NorVA Centre, 177 Green Street Flin Flon Mb. R8A 0G5
Please confirm by email or in person.  Pay by July 5th or if you can’t by then, have a word with Mike Spencer, just to let us know to expect you.  A scholarship position is available.

Format:
Open Sunday July 17 at 6:00 p.m.
Set up may take place at that time. No evening meal is planned.  Bring floor coverings, table coverings and lighting for working indoors. Tables and chairs are provided.
Monday and on:
Artists will work as they wish from dawn to dusk and beyond.  The Denareplex will house the retreat. Karen will be on site overnight for those artists who wish to work on into the wee hours. Dave Gunn has donated use of a “wedding” tent so we can mess about, spill and thrill outside.

Monday after lunch we will gather for introductions and opening remarks
Every afternoon at around 4:00 those who wish to share their days progress can join a happy hour of show and tell.
Sharing of songs, writing and poetry may follow suppers as the mood dictates.
If any other workshops become available we will let you know.  Informal demonstrations during the retreat by artists for artists are encouraged. ( well even formal ones, if you want to dress up)
Saturday evening, July 23 from 7:00 to 9:00
we will have an exhibition of our work and enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere. Artists do not have to stop working though. The exhibit will be open to the public, followed by the Blueberry Raffle and music and maybe a trip to the village pub!
Sunday morning, July 24, we will pack up and clean up by noon.

Meals:  In order to minimize costs artists will team up with one or two other artists to take turns cooking one meal. The benefit is not only in minimizing the costs but in providing sharing recipes and favorite dishes with each other. Don’t break the bank! Use of leftovers is totally absolutely encouraged ( and necessary).
Basic breakfast, coffee and tea are provided as part of the registration fee.  Karen will contact you in good time to plan,  with  your partners names and contact information.

Materials: Artists are responsible for bringing their own supplies including a paper table cover and ground sheet to cover their floor space. Extension cord and lighting will be useful too.
Facility:  large open dance hall with capacity for 35 artists ( at least) Well equipped kitchen. General overhead lighting.

Accommodation:
At least two local artists have offered space in their yards or homes for those who have to travel to get to Denare Beach, if you are from Flin Flon or far away! Contact Karen and she will put you in touch.
